Biomedicine: leadership through efforts consolidation

October 30, Moscow – A panel discussion “Global health industry. How can Russia remain in the market of global innovation?” was held within the framework of the third day of the Technology Forum and Show “Open Innovations” 2015, dedicated to the health and quality of life. The discussion was attended by representatives of the government agencies, academic community and business. The discussion was moderated by Adviser to the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation Igor Lanskoy.

“Medicine is an area, which is oriented to the future, resting on the traditions, and the biomedicine is a promising direction, opening up new opportunities and improving the quality of life”, - Deputy Minister of Health of the Russian Federation Igor Kagramanyan said, speaking at the opening of the discussion. Given this, the Deputy Minister pointed out, it is important to speak not about maintaining positions in the market of global innovations, but about advancing Russia to the leading positions in the field of medicine.

The focus of discussion was the public analytical report “Biomedicine”, presented by Director of the Department of Innovative Development and Scientific Design of the Ministry of Health of Russia Sergey Rumyantsev. The report deals with modern challenges of public health in general, it reflects the main trends and directions of the biomedicine development; problems and challenges, which the government, academic community and business face in the field of biomedicine, were stated. That is why it is so important, Chairman of the Board of Directors of “R-PHARM” CJSC Aleksey Repik said in his speech, that all the interested parties – the government, academic community and business participate in the discussion: “We must not remain in the market of global innovations, we must define it”.

In the course of discussion, three problem points of the biomedicine and health care in general were marked – infrastructure, human resources and regulatory support. According to founding partner of “RMI Partners” Leonid Melamed, when solving these problems, it is not enough to orient and use the international experience – it is necessary to become better in all elements that form the medicine and biotechnologies: tax system, regulatory standards, scientists, infrastructure should become the best in the world.

One of the tools for infrastructure development and consolidation of scientists of different directions and manufacturers should become developing medical clusters in Moscow and St. Petersburg, on the prospects for the work of which Rector of the Russian Scientific Research Institute named after Pirogov Sergey Lukyanov and Director of the Institute of Experimental Medicine of the Center named after Almazov Mikhail Galagudza told. Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Center of High Technologies “KhimRar” Andrey Ivashchenko and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Generium CJSC, member of the Board of Directors of “Pharmstandard” OJSC Aleksandr Shuster also told about their vision of solving problems of biomedicine in Russia.

Summing up the session, participants noted the importance of holding discussions in this format, as only the participation of all the interested parties will allow to confirm the leading positions of Russia in the international market of medicine and biotechnology.
